If it’s true that every dark cloud really does have a silver lining, the upside of the current sky-high gas prices is that lots of folks are choosing to trade in their big gas-guzzlers for smaller and more environmentally-friendly wheels. Like the Volkswagen Jetta, for example.
For 2009, the compact Jetta is offered in both sedan and a new “sportwagen” body style.
Both offer a choice of two gasoline engines with above-average fuel economy numbers of around 30 miles-per-gallon highway. Better still is the new TDI model’s clean diesel powerplant that delivers a combination of excellent performance and an impressive 41 MPG highway, a number that puts many hybrids to shame.
Then there’s the fun-to-drive factor. Both Jetta body styles feature European-tuned steering and independent suspension that give them a nimble feeling few compact models can match.
Inside, the passenger cabin sports comfortable seating for four along with VW’s characteristic attractive design and top-quality materials. The new sportwagen offers the added advantage of a fold-flat front passenger seat, 60/40-split rear seatbacks, and good-sized rear cargo area that make it every bit as capable in the schlepping department as many small SUVs.
Add it all up and the Jetta delivers enough European style, performance, and outstanding fuel economy to actually make the inevitable process of downsizing quite enjoyable.
