Take one part muscle car nostalgia, add an equal measure of modern technology, and you have the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger coupe.
Of the three available Challenger models, the most practical powertrain choices are the SE’s surprisingly gutsy 3.5-liter V-6 and the R/T’s 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, both of which offer plenty of power and halfway decent EPA fuel economy estimates. The SRT-8’s fire-breathing 425-horsepower, 6.1-liter Hemi is another story altogether, as it sucks down fuel at a rate only an oil company executive could love.
While all three versions are plenty of fun to drive, we think most folks will find the SE and R/T models much more livable thanks to suspensions that deliver a good balance between a comfortable ride and sporty handling. The SRT-8’s much firmer underpinnings, on the other hand, produce a noticeably harsher ride quality that makes it suitable only for hardcore gearheads.
Inside, the Challenger’s handsome interior offers good comfort up front and a back seat that’s bigger than you might expect from such a sporty-looking coupe. Even the affordable SE model is well-equipped with desirable standard features that should make budget-conscious buyers feel like they’re getting a good bang for their buck.
In short, we think the Challenger’s blend of old-school muscle car looks, modern performance, and everyday practicality are a sure-fire recipe for success.
